Appleby is a traditional English market town set in beautiful countryside between the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Appleby is a small and picturesque town with a population of around 3,000 people, situated within a loop of the River Eden.

Appleby’s main industries are farming, the service sector and tourism. For our size, we have a very wide range of shops and services on offer, reflecting our position as the market town serving the town, the surrounding Heart of Eden villages and our rural farming community. Tourism in Appleby
Appleby is an attractive place for tourists to visit and many thousands of people come to enjoy the town and surrounding area throughout the year. Appleby’s tourism is built on its history, beautiful location and closeness to the Lakes, Dales and Pennines.
Appleby is overlooked by the privately-owned Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman structure, which provided the home for Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century. Tours of the Castle can be made through the Tourist Information Centre. Our town Blue Badge Guide Ron Smith leads tours of the town centre every Tuesday
The town is well known for the annual Appleby Horse Fair, which has been held in early June since at least the 18th century. This brings the Travelling community from all over Britain to the town. Appleby is also on the historic Settle to Carlisle railway, and the station is an easy walk from the centre of town.
